1948–1974
The Beginning of Dongwha
Dongwha Enterprise, the origin of Dongwha Group, began on April 2, 1948 as a small sawmill in Hawangsimni-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. The name Dongwha (東和) was personally coined by founder and former chairman Seung Sang-bae to mean ‘Peace of the East,’ and it endures to this day. In 1971, Dongwha became the first in Korea to enclose the sea around Incheon Harbor to build a large-scale underwater log storage yard, and went further to develop a lumber industrial complex — laying the foundation to grow into Korea’s leading timber company.
1975–1990
Dawn of Process Industry
After launching its particle board (PB) business in 1975 and beginning MDF production in 1986, Dongwha ushered in an era of full-scale process industry and technology-intensive, high-value-added business. By securing an in-house system to produce formalin, an essential auxiliary material for wood panel products, Dongwha strengthened its capabilities in technology-intensive industries.
1990–2003
A Leader in Wood-Based Panels
Dongwha wound down the sawmill business it had run for over 40 years and shifted its core products to PB and MDF. By building production systems spanning formalin, resin, wax, LPM, and MFB, Dongwha established itself as a leader in wood-based panels. It also completed Korea’s first laminate flooring plant, laying the groundwork to leap forward as a comprehensive wood-processing company. Its operations were innovatively improved as well: by building a next-generation information system, Dongwha developed the capacity to respond sensitively to external changes while systematizing and modernizing its internal work systems.
2003–2010
Leap to a Global Enterprise
Along with management innovations such as transitioning to a holding company structure through corporate spin-off, Dongwha successively expanded into Malaysia, New Zealand, Vietnam and other regions around the world, establishing its position as a global enterprise.
2010-2019
Diversification and Global Growth
In the 2010s, Dongwha successfully expanded its business horizons into the auto-life (M Park) and media (Hankookilbo, Korea Times) sectors. Having taken on the character of a comprehensive global enterprise through successful diversification, Dongwha now keeps evolving toward broader world markets.
2020-Present
Forward Toward a 100-Year Company
By opening a global Central Research Institute, Dongwha built an integrated R&D control tower and diversified into secondary-battery core materials, a high-value-added industry of the future. Having secured global production bases spanning Europe and North America, Dongwha is forging ahead — beyond the paradigm of a manufacturer — as a global advanced-materials company toward a sustainable 100-year future.
